1. CGPA Cutoff Overview — Quick Reference
Before diving into company-specific details, here is SRM's placement CGPA landscape at a glance. These numbers are based on the official eligibility criteria companies communicate to SRM's placement cell, aggregated from the 2024 and 2025 placement seasons.
Important: These are minimum eligibility cutoffs — meeting them does not guarantee a job offer. After the CGPA filter, companies evaluate aptitude tests, coding rounds, technical interviews, and HR interviews. CGPA gets you through the door; skills close the deal.
2. Tier 1 — MAANG & Top Product Companies
These are the most coveted placements at SRM. Minimum CGPA is typically 7.5–8.0, but the actual selection rate depends overwhelmingly on DSA (Data Structures & Algorithms) performance in online assessments and multiple interview rounds.
For Tier 1 companies, CGPA is a filtering criterion, not a selection criterion. SRM has seen students with 9.2 CGPA fail to clear Google's DSA rounds, and students with 7.6 CGPA receive Microsoft offers. Invest equally in DSA preparation starting from Semester 4.
3. Tier 2 — Mid-Tier Product & Unicorn Startups
This category offers the best combination of achievable CGPA cutoffs and competitive salaries. Companies here conduct 2–3 technical rounds focused on coding ability, project experience, and domain knowledge.
4. Tier 3 — IT Service Giants (Mass Recruiters)
These companies recruit the largest number of SRM students each year. The CGPA bar is lower but the selection process still involves aptitude and communication rounds. Packages are lower, but these are reliable, accessible placements for the majority of students.
TCS, Infosys, and Wipro together hire roughly 40–50% of all SRM placed students each year. Even if you are aiming for Tier 1 or 2, register for Tier 3 drives in Semester 7 as a safety net — the processes are straightforward and offer guaranteed income while you continue applying for better roles.
5. Tier 4 — Core Engineering & PSU Recruiters
For students from Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and Electronics branches who want core domain jobs rather than IT roles. PSU recruitment is additionally governed by GATE scores, but some direct campus PSU ties exist for SRM.
6. Tier 5 — Banking, Finance & MBA-Linked Roles
A smaller but growing segment at SRM placements. These roles are primarily accessible to students from all branches but require strong quantitative aptitude and communication skills.
7. Branch-Wise CGPA Expectations at SRM Placements
CGPA cutoffs are not identical across all branches. IT and CSE branches face the most competitive filtering because the volume of applicants is highest. Here are realistic expected thresholds per branch:
8. CGPA vs Skills — The Real Trade-off in 2026
The placement landscape in 2026 has shifted noticeably compared to 2020. Companies — especially product-focused ones — have significantly increased the weight of technical assessments and internship experience relative to CGPA alone.
| Company Type | Weight of CGPA | Weight of DSA/Skills | Weight of Projects/Internship |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAANG / Top Product | Low filter (7.5+) | Very High | High |
| Mid-tier Product | Moderate (7.0+) | High | High |
| IT Service (TCS, Infosys) | High (6.0–7.0+) | Moderate | Low-Moderate |
| Core Engineering | Very High | Moderate (domain) | Moderate |
| Banking / BFSI | Moderate | Low-Moderate | Low |
The key insight: For IT service companies, CGPA is the primary filter and everything else is secondary. For product companies, CGPA is just a gate — passing through it means the real competition begins. Plan your preparation accordingly based on which tier you are targeting.
A student with a 7.2 CGPA and 200+ LeetCode problems solved is a stronger candidate for Zoho or Freshworks than a student with 8.5 CGPA and no coding practice. Build both — but allocate extra time to whichever is weaker relative to your target company tier.
9. What If Your CGPA Is Below the Cutoff?
This is the honest section. If your CGPA genuinely falls below the threshold for your target companies, you have three realistic paths:
Improve CGPA Before Placement Season (If Time Allows)
If you are in Semester 5 or earlier, a focused improvement strategy can realistically push your CGPA above the 7.0 threshold by Semester 7 — when most companies register eligibility. Use the CGPA improvement guide and the SRM GPA Calculator to map your required semester GPAs.
Off-Campus Applications — CGPA Rules Are Often Flexible
On-campus drives at SRM enforce CGPA cutoffs strictly because the placement cell filters applicants before companies see resumes. Off-campus applications bypass this — many companies apply different (often lower) standards when evaluating direct applicants, especially if your portfolio, GitHub, or internship experience is strong.
Compensate With an Outstanding Internship or Project
A well-documented 6-month internship at a recognisable company, or an open-source project with real GitHub stars, can effectively override a borderline CGPA in the eyes of product company interviewers. This path requires significantly more initiative but is well documented among SRM alumni who successfully placed in Tier 2 companies despite sub-7 CGPAs.
Do not misrepresent your CGPA on your resume or in applications. SRM's placement cell and companies both verify academic records as part of background checks post-offer. Any discrepancy results in offer revocation and can be flagged on your permanent academic record.
10. SRM Placement Season Timeline — When to Prepare
Understanding when each phase of the SRM placement process occurs helps you plan your CGPA improvement and skills preparation with the right urgency.
| Academic Period | Placement Activity | What to Focus On |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1–3 | No placement activity | Build CGPA foundation. Every O grade here compounds for years. |
| Semester 4 | Internship awareness begins | Start DSA on LeetCode/HackerRank. Apply for summer internships (May–July). |
| Semester 5 | Pre-placement talks (PPTs) begin from top companies | Solidify DSA. Start competitive programming. CGPA still highly improvable. |
| Semester 6 | SRM placement cell registration opens | CGPA freeze point for most companies. Resume building + mock interviews. |
| Semester 7 (Jul–Dec) | Main campus placement season — majority of drives happen | Interview prep, aptitude practice, company-specific research. |
| Semester 8 (Jan–Apr) | Second round drives + off-campus | Continue applications. Final year project viva — a CGPA booster opportunity. |
Critical deadline: Most companies use your CGPA as of the end of Semester 6 (or the latest available transcript) for eligibility filtering. This means your effective CGPA deadline is your Semester 6 result — typically available in May/June of your 3rd year. Plan your improvement timeline backwards from this date.
